After weeks of use, we found that the Polywood Modern Curveback Adirondack Chair (available at Amazon) , is the best Adirondack chair we tested because it’s sturdy, attractive, and supportive. However, there are plenty of great Adirondack chairs on our list to choose from.

This Keter Adirondack chair is the best one if you're looking for a portable option that folds down easily.

Keter Willoughby Folding Adirondack Chair
  • Dimensions: 30 x 36.25 x 36 in (W x H x D)
  • Weight limit: 400 lbs
  • Material: Resin
  • Waterproof: Yes
  • UV protected: Yes
  • Assembly required: Yes

The Keter Premium Willoughby Folding Adirondack Chair is a sturdy, easy-to-assemble piece of furniture built to withstand the elements—even in the harshest conditions. It holds up well in daily rainstorms and is unaffected by sitting in the hot Florida sun.

And unlike many competitors, this model can be broken down and folded for easy transportation and storage when the right adventure comes calling.

We tried out a pair of chairs and had both unboxed and built in about a half hour. It’s a job easier completed by two people than one—as most tasks are—but it’s certainly doable on your own.

Like most Adirondack chairs, it is hard and not especially comfortable. However, the seat depth allows room for a pillow to comfortably support your backside, which we found provided an adequate cushion.

Arguably the best feature of the chair is its portability. At 49 pounds, it’s a little cumbersome, but a simple pin function allows you to fold the chair in half easily, should you need to take it on the go.

Pros

  • Weatherproof

  • Sturdy

  • Folds down easily

Cons

  • Can be heavy to move

Other Adirondack Chairs We Tested

Lifetime Adirondack Chair
  • Dimensions: 31.1 x 36.9 inches
  • Weight limit: 300 lbs
  • Material: Polystyrene faux wood
  • Waterproof: No
  • UV protected: Yes
  • Assembly required: Yes

The Lifetime Adirondack Chair hits high marks. It’s comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, tip-resistant, sturdy, and comes in a wide variety of colors. The Lifetime comfortably fits a variety of different heights, too.

The curved seat is comfortable and roomy for a body’s natural shape. It also has wide armrests, so it’s easy to balance a plate of food or drink. The sturdy construction makes it easy to get in and out of.

While it did get a few light splotches after being left out in several rainstorms, it’s still fade-resistant. Wiping it down with water and a cloth should easily remove these.

Though it may not be the easiest to store, it should fit into an average-sized basement or storage shed. The downside? This chair has a lot of parts and is difficult to assemble.

That said, the Lifetime store on Amazon includes expert assembly for the chair if you’re not adept at assembling outdoor furniture. As you likely won’t be reassembling your chair every season, we consider this a minor inconvenience to an otherwise great chair.

Pros

  • Tip-resistant

  • Cool design

  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Hard to assemble

Product image of LL Bean All-Weather Waterfall Adirondack Chair
L.L. Bean All-Weather Waterfall Adirondack Chair
  • Dimensions: 35 x 25.5 inches
  • Weight limit: 325 lbs
  • Material: Polyethylene wood
  • Waterproof: No
  • UV protected: No
  • Assembly required: Yes

The L.L. Bean All-Weather Waterfall Chair is a classic wood Adirondack chair by an iconic brand. It’s attractive, easy to assemble, and relatively tip-resistant. As with nearly all L.L. Bean products, it has a robust build and can withstand the outdoor elements.

The simple design matches most settings but offers more functionality than style. The “waterfall” refers to the curved lip at the edge of the seat, which is comfortable for your leg pits. It’s easy to balance a plate of food on, although the arms aren’t as wide as other chairs we found.

The L.L. Bean Adirondack chair is made of high-density polyethylene that can withstand extreme weather, and L.L. Bean claims you will never need to repaint it.

What makes this chair so great is its durability, but the hardness of the wood is one of its downsides. We found that sitting in the chair for long periods of time caused some mid-back pain, but attaching a small cushion to the back of the chair makes it more comfortable.

Pros

  • Sturdy build

  • Weather-resistant

  • Classic design

Cons

  • Uncomfortable

If you’re looking for a straightforward all-weather outdoor chair, this looks like a great product. Flash Furniture’s Charlestown Adirondack Chair is sold individually, and reviewers say it’s easy for one person to put together in about half an hour.

It’s treated for weather resistance and UV protection; it’s sturdily made from high-quality materials like resin, wood, and stainless steel. Folks can’t quite agree on just how comfortable it is, but you could add a cushion if necessary.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble

  • Sturdily made

Cons

  • Not fully waterproof

  • Weight limit: 250 lbs
  • Material: Wood

If you’re looking for a solid rocking-chair option, this wooden rocker is one of the most popular Adirondack chairs on Amazon. Assembly can be tricky with this one—reviewers say the instruction booklet isn’t great—but it’s affordable, comfy, and made of real wood.

The wood is a little plain, but a lot of folks who buy this one say they plan on painting or staining it anyway. And the right coat of stain will help protect it against the elements; it doesn’t appear to have much in the way of weatherproofing out of the box. It’s got a weight limit of 250 pounds.

Pros

  • Easy to paint or stain

  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Assembly can be tricky

If you need to buy a whole new set of outdoor furniture, these are a great all-in-one solution. You can get them in bundles of two, four, six, or eight, and they have a capacity of up to 300 pounds.

They’re not advertised as fully waterproof or having UV protection, but they’re made of synthetic weather-resistant plastic that’s easy to wipe down and won’t rot if left outdoors. There’s a little assembly required, but they look great, and reviewers say they’re comfortable.

Pros

  • Comfortable

  • Easy to clean

  • 3-year warranty

Cons

How to Choose the Best Adirondack Chair for You

The Adirondack chair has a long history named “The Westport Chair” and originally designed by Thomas Lee as a wooden chair for the outdoors. Another designer named Irving Wolpin also created a “lawn chair” better molded to the human shape and has come to define the modern Adirondack chair.

While different designs and materials are used today, all Adirondack chairs are traceable to the original “Westport Chair.” Adirondack chairs now come in many different shapes and sizes and can be used as lawn chairs or to compliment your front porch or back deck.

Overall comfort, ease of use, and aesthetics play a part in choosing the right Adirondack chair, but you’ll also want to consider how durable they are since they’ll be responsible for holding you for years to come. Weather-resistant chairs are available if you plan on leaving your chairs out from time to time or live somewhere especially wet, like New England.

What Is the Best Material for Adirondack Chairs?

While Adirondack chairs come in different materials, the most popular options are wood and plastic. There are pros and cons to both. Wood chairs are more attractive than plastic ones but are also more expensive. The material you choose depends on how much you want to spend on it. A material like resin will last you longer than plastic.

Are Adirondack Chairs Durable?

Plastic chairs are more weather-resistant than wooden ones, but some are flimsy. Plastic chairs heat up less than natural wood when left in the sun. Wood chairs are often far more sturdy but are prone to weather damage and require more upkeep.

For a long-lasting Adirondack chair, choose one made of resin or Polywood.

What Size of Adirondack Chairs Is Best?

That really depends on your height. Taller people will likely need larger chairs to be comfortable, while shorter individuals might need something smaller.

Another factor to consider is your available outdoor space—if you have limited space, you may want smaller chairs or ones that fold down for better storage. Some of the chairs we reviewed were more difficult to store than others.

Adirondack chairs can double as patio chairs if you don't have a lawn.

How to Clean an Adirondack Chair

Plastic Adirondack chairs are relatively easy to clean, as they only require gentle dish soap and water. A pressure washer can help remove caked-on dirt and gunk. We recommend using a low setting to avoid accidental damage to the chair.

Beware that a lightweight plastic chair might tip over if you clean it with a pressure washer. A garden hose is a good alternative cleaning method.

Like plastic chairs, gently scrubbing your wooden chair with soap and water is an effective way to clean it, although you may want to use an oil-based soap for natural wood.

Rinse your wooden chair with a garden hose instead of a pressure washer to avoid stripping the paint or sealer. Let it air dry before storing it to reduce your chances of mold or rotting.

Are Adirondack Chairs Weatherproof?

Pastic is more weather-resistant than wood, but we recommend storing both inside a shed to protect the material from the elements. Weatherproof chairs that are UV-resistant and repel water can be left outside.

Wooden Adirondack chairs require more work to keep them looking good because they are more prone to damage from outside weather. Excess water left on a wooden chair can cause it to rot, so cover or store them when not in use. You may need to refinish some wood periodically to keep them from fading in the sun.
