Amazon can be a great place to buy a mattress online. The retail giant has everything from traditional innerspring mattresses to memory foam and hybrid mattresses.

With all the choices on Amazon, finding the best mattress might seem complicated, but we’re here to help—we’ve been testing top-rated mattresses for years. Right now, our favorite hybrid mattress available on Amazon is the Leesa Sapira Hybrid (available at Leesa) , which offers a top-shelf sleep experience. We also love the Tuft & Needle Original (available at Amazon) for its supportive, firm surface.

There are a lot of great mattresses out there, though. If our favorites here aren’t what you’re looking for, a little more research can help you find the right mattress for you. After all, everyone has different sleep needs.

The recommendations in this guide are based on thorough product and market research by our team of expert product reviewers. The picks are based on examining user reviews, product specifications, and, in some limited cases, our experience with the specific products named.

We think everyone will love the Leesa Hybrid, and that it's worth every penny.

Best Hybrid Mattress
Leesa Sapira Hybrid
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Materials: Two layers of foam atop a pocket-spring base with a layer of dense foam at the base
  • Firmness: Medium to medium-firm
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Our favorite hybrid mattress that we’ve tested, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid is amazing to sleep on in any position. While it’s expensive, we think it’s worth the investment. It offers sleepers a sturdy but buoyant feel while offering unparalleled motion isolation and excellent heat diffusion.

What reviews say: While the Leesa does not have a huge number of reviews, the ratings are mostly positive, with it getting an overall rating of 4.3 stars. “I purchased, and returned, a number of mattresses through Amazon. None delivered the ability to sleep in all positions and still be comfortable to lounge in... until the Leesa,” wrote one five-star reviewer after sleeping on the bed for nine months. Some complaints centered on delivery and return issues. Others wrote about off-gassing, but smells dissipated fairly quickly during our testing.

The best mattress in a box - Tuft & Needle
Credit: Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle's Original Mattress offers a lot of bang for your buck.

Best Foam Mattress
Tuft & Needle Original Mattress
  • Mattress type: Foam
  • Materials: Gel-infused open-cell foam top, foundational support foam base
  • Firmness: Firm
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

The Tuft & Needle Original mattress, our favorite foam mattress in a box, is a fantastic mattress for anyone looking for firmer support in a bed. In fact, some people might even find this bed too firm. It does a great job of isolating motion, and it is more cooling than many foam mattresses we tested. We did notice that edge support was a bit iffy in our lab tests, an issue that often plagues foam beds.

What reviews say: The Tuft & Needle has nearly 16,000 ratings on Amazon, with an average of 4.4 stars. More than 70% give this mattress five stars. “I call it my marshmallow bed, because it really is that comfortable,” wrote a five-star reviewer after sleeping on the mattress for three months. That reviewer posted after three years and again after six years to say that she still loved the mattress.

Pros

  • Affordable

  • Great motion isolation

  • Excellent cooling

Cons

  • Iffy edge support

Product image of The Original Purple Mattress
Purple
  • Mattress type: Foam
  • Firmness: Medium-firm
  • Materials: Proprietary gel grid, three other foam layers for edge support, comfort, and base support
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King

Purple’s unique gel memory foam design results in an undeniably comfortable surface that hugs the body without feeling like quicksand. It also absorbs movement extremely well. During testing, it cradled the body regardless of preferred sleep position. In our lab testing, Purple offered reasonable edge support and cooling performance.

What reviews say: The Purple mattress has 4.5 stars with more than 1,300 ratings. Almost 80% of reviewers give it five stars. “After 15 years with a misaligned spine from injury, I’ve finally been sleeping through the night, with no extra body pillows for support and zero pain in the morning,” wrote one satisfied customer. “Also feeling refreshed due to not excessively overheating while I sleep!” Some of the complaints focused on price, which is something our tester agreed with, as this mattress is expensive.

Pros

  • Firm

  • Sleeps cool

  • Limited motion transfer

Cons

  • Hard to move

Product image of Nectar Mattress
The Nectar Mattress
  • Mattress type: Foam
  • Firmness: Medium-firm
  • Materials: Gel-infused memory foam, support foam, foam base layer
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King

During testing, we found the Nectar mattress to be ultra-soft, with that sink-in sensation that side sleepers might be looking for. This mattress did a great job dissipating heat in our lab, but it didn’t fare as well with edge support, a common problem with all-foam mattresses. The Nectar, because of its softness, could be a good option for side sleepers who needs a less firm mattress.

What reviews say: The Nectar has more than 5,000 ratings with an average of 4.3 stars. Some five-star reviewers noted the comfort, support, and affordable price. Compared to other mattresses on this list, however, the Nectar does have a slightly higher negative rating, with 9% of people giving it a one-star rating. Some of the negative reviews focused on the return process and difficulties dealing with Nectar customer service because the mattress was purchased on Amazon.

Pros

  • Cradles body

  • Stays cool

  • May be good for side sleepers

Cons

  • May be too soft

  • Felt warm at times

  • Limited edge support

Product image of Lucid 10 Inch Medium Gel Memory Foam Mattress
Lucid
  • Mattress type: Foam
  • Firmness: Medium-firm
  • Materials: Gel-infused memory foam, transition layer of foam, support foam base layer
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King

The Lucid 10-inch medium firm gel memory foam mattress we tested is suitable for stomach sleepers—it's on the firmer side, but it’s not the most supportive. Side sleepers and back sleepers may want to look at other options. (Lucid also has firm and plush mattresses.) This bed is inexpensive, with a queen mattress under $350 on Amazon, but it only did an average job of dispersing heat during testing, and it was bad at isolating motion.

What reviews say: The Lucid mattress has nearly 20,000 ratings, with customers giving it an average of 4.5 stars. Almost 15,000 reviewers give this mattress five stars. Plenty of the five-star reviews focused on the value of the bed, like this one: “My body feels great after sleeping on it, and I don't feel that it's too firm. … For the price, this bed is a real winner.”

Pros

  • Firm

  • Not as hot as some foam mattresses

Cons

  • Poor motion isolation

  • Feels cheap

Product image of Layla Mattress
Layla
  • Mattress type: Foam
  • Firmness: Soft on one side; firm on the other
  • Materials: Cooling cover, copper-gel memory foam, airflow support foam, support core foam
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Layla sets itself apart from the other mattresses we tested for its two sleep surfaces. One side is firm, while the other is soft. Also, the memory foam on both sides is infused with copper, which claims to help keep you cooler and has antimicrobial properties. The two levels of softness is an interesting concept for buyers who aren’t sure of their preferences, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. During testing, it was more like this mattress has a soft side and a too-soft side.

What reviews say: While this mattress does not have the number of ratings as the Linenspa and Lucid, it does have an overall rating of 4.5 stars (69% of which are five-stars). It also has good ratings for comfort (4.4 stars), softness (4.3 stars), and pain relief (4.1 stars).

Pros

  • Two firmness options

  • Copper infused

Cons

  • May be too hot for some sleepers

  • Too soft, even on the "firm" side

Product image of Linenspa 8" Hybrid Mattress
Linenspa 8-inch hybrid
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Firmness: Medium-firm
  • Materials: Quilted memory foam top layer, comfort foam, steel spring base
  • Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, Short Queen, King, California King

The Linenspa 8-inch memory foam and innerspring hybrid mattress has a medium-firm feel. A layer of foam for comfort is sandwiched between a quilted memory foam top layer and its steel spring base. At under $200 for a queen mattress, the Linenspa is one of the most affordable beds that you can find online.

What reviews say: The Linenspa 8-inch is the best-selling mattress on Amazon, with an astonishing 130,000-plus ratings. With an overall rating of 4.5 stars, this mattress has nearly 100,000 five-star ratings. How to Buy to Best Amazon Mattress

Buying a mattress on Amazon can be a great option. There are some things to be aware of, however. Here are some factors to consider.

Firmness

Regardless of where you purchase your mattress, choosing the right firmness is an essential part to finding the proper comfort and support—and ultimately getting a good night’s rest. Your sleep preferences can help determine what level of plushness is appropriate.

In general, side sleepers will want to look for a softer bed that still supports pressure points, such as hips and shoulders. That softness can come from a pillow top or layers of memory foam.

Stomach sleepers need a more firm bed. When considering foam beds, stomach sleepers will likely want to choose at least a medium softness, but may be happier with a firm foam mattress. Another option would be to choose a hybrid mattress, which has both foam and innersprings.

In general, back sleepers fall in between side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Medium to medium-firm mattresses could be a solid choice. They can balance the pressure relieving comfort of softer mattresses with the support of firmer mattresses.

If temperature regulation is an issue, be aware that foam mattresses have a reputation for trapping heat. Some manufacturers have incorporated cooling measures that would bring relief to hot sleepers.

Price

Amazon can be a great place to find marked down mattresses. That said, make sure to price check, especially against the mattress manufacturer, to make sure you’re really getting a deal on Amazon.

Sleep Trial and Warranty

While mattress companies often offer generous sleep trial periods and warranties when beds are purchased directly from them, it’s a little more complicated when buying a mattress on Amazon.

Amazon says you can request a return or refund within 100 days of receiving a mattress ordered from the retailer. To return a mattress, however, it must be unopened and in its original packaging. Once a bed is unboxed and expanded, a full-size mattress is not returnable. It may be eligible for a refund.

Things get even more dicey if you buy a bed from a third party vendor on Amazon, so you should really make sure you know from whom you’re buying a mattress. While Amazon says most third-party sellers offer a returns policy equivalent to its own, some policies may vary.

With warranties, the terms may be different if you buy a mattress directly from a manufacturer or from an authorized dealer than from Amazon or a third-party vendor. Before you make a purchase, you should read the fine print on the manufacturer’s website, especially since the 10-year lifespan of a mattress is a long time to be stuck with something you don’t like.
