Think “high end kitchen” and the aesthetic of “professional-style” might come to mind—a utilitarian style that recalls the back of house at your favorite restaurant.

But not everyone wants to pretend they're a professional chef, and not everyone likes thick handles and lots of stainless. That's why these upscale appliances all come with sleek, modern design—including European-style handles and a fit that mounts flush with built-in cabinetry.

Best of all, they aren't just pretty faces. We've actually put these ovens, ranges, cooktops, and dishwashers through the same rigorous tests we subject all appliances to in our Cambridge, MA labs. We can confidently say that these modern appliances will work as well as they look.

When we first saw Miele’s new gas range, we called it “visually stunning.” We were impressed by features like pivoting handles and the M Touch system—an intuitive touchscreen that actually makes cooking easier with preset recipes.

Once we spent some time cooking on it, we were even more impressed. In our real-world food tests, burners got hot enough to sear a steak but also feature Miele's True Simmer setting—which we found got pans as low as 117ºF in our tests. An induction version is also available.

It's also a good fit for a busy lifestyle: The oven took only 12 minutes to preheat on a standard setting, and just over six minutes to preheat using convection. Read the full review

Even the door bins inside this Monogram fridge have a minimalist appeal.

With its European-style handles and glass door bins, this U.S.-made, built-in French door has sleek looks to match its stellar performance.

In fact, in our fridge and freezer tests it outchilled similar models from Sub-Zero. We recorded even temperatures throughout, and user reliability reviews are strong, too. Another benefit: Monogram is a division of GE, so you can rely on a national service network if anything does happen to go wrong.

Like the matching range, Miele's German-made wall oven has the company’s M Touch automatic recipe system. It also has stellar build quality, including a soft-close door and articulated handle.

More importantly, it made some of the best roasts we ever cooked. In fact, this double oven outperformed every wall oven we’ve ever tested. You can customize the handles and exterior colors, too. Read the full review

Induction boils quickly, simmers precisely, and is easy to clean.

Thanks to a transitional design that fits every kind of kitchen, we recommend Thermador’s induction cooktop no matter what your style is. But the power of induction—which uses magnets to rapidly and precisely heat pots and pans directly instead of the surface beneath them—is a modern touch all its own. Read the full review

Miele Futura Diamond Dishwasher

The Futura Diamond has every feature you could imagine in a dishwasher. In fact, in a panel-ready guise, it comes with a unique Knock2Open feature: Instead of a handle, just knock on the front panel, and it will slowly open. That allows for truly flush installation.

A specialized cycle is rated at just 38 dBA, and it got dishes clean and dry—although we weren’t fans of the Diamond’s confusing user interface.

With a dishwasher this quiet, hidden, and perfect at cleaning, your guests might just think your dishes magically clean themselves. Read the full review
